Reflection on my first year in Planning
As the end of term approaches, I’m feeling quite reflective of my first year in my Planning major. I have learned so much about this discipline and about myself, and I wanted to take a moment to share!
Here are 10 things I learned in planning school so far:
I have beef with Henry Ford for his role in the creation of auto-dependence (amongst many other things).
Bike lanes are important. I didn’t really understand their importance before. But I get it now. Granted I don’t really use them because I’m stuck in the suburbs… but I will always advocate for them!
Planning students are very kind and sociable people! I’ve made so many friends in the past 8 months. This degree really helped me come out of my shell!
Engagement events aren’t all that bad. I had a class that required students to attend at least one this past term, and it was quite informative. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did!
This program's course load feels heavy, but the classes are very insightful of what working in the field will be like. The professors are excited to help and want to see you succeed.
Creativity in assignments is preferred! As someone who thinks of themselves as a highly creative person, it feels empowering for me to not only have the option to visually display my ideas, but I appreciate the freedom to choose unique ways to present my work in general.
Unfortunately, funding has a huge impact on what you can and cannot do as a planner. I always knew that, but I guess I didn’t consider just how limiting it can be at times. It sucks, but it is what it is.
Thanks to a story told in class by Neal LaMontagne, I now have a “You Should Go There!” list, which is essentially a bucket list of all the places I hope to see one day. It makes me feel like a real dedicated planner.
I go feral for a good transit map.
I care a lot about urban design! I’ve always liked pretty places, but I’ve learned I care a lot about functionality too. I didn’t consider how a good design, no matter how big or small, has a lot of power to change how we interact with spaces.
It’s been a treat getting to know members of GAPSS this year and I loved my time on the Media Committee! I can’t wait to see what the club has in store for 2025/26!
I wish everyone a happy end of term and good luck on all your final exams and assessments. <3.
